View Full Version : Need help! Stripping 09 metal diffs

-KMRC Chassis
-Parts for 09 diff front and rear
-Wraith 7k and Quark
-11.1v li-po

With this setup, i'm stripping the little metal gear that meshes with the metal 09 gear diff on on the rear of my car. I already ordered and installed new bulkheads, but I don't tighten it down all the way. If I do, I get way too much friction and binding.

Anyone have any suggestions on what I should do? Thanks

Run them in the normal manner and put a small divet on the KM-RC chassis with a dremel and you won't strip them anymore. You have to run the Brushless motor in reverse now but it doesn't matter. Works GREAT!

oh yea, I actually do have it reversed already.I've seen your thread about it, and thats how I stripped my first set. I now have the diffs placed how you do, but i'm still having some problems.

Do you have the bulkhead screws tightened all the way down? How easy is it to roll the car by hand?

Are you using the correct screws for the bulkhead to chassis? The screw may cause the diff pinion to bind if they are too long.

I'm pretty sure i'm using the right screws. It can't be because theres too much power right? I think people have almost the same setup and they're only using ST diffs.

I'm running a wraith 7k motor with Quark 33k esc on 3 cells lips on my mini infernos. I'm still using the ST's plastic diffs and diff pinions. They have been holding up fine for me.

Maybe the 09 diffs are slightly bigger? Causing them to bind in a Non-09 bulkhead?

Take a picture to show where it is binding, and which screw you need to loosen in order to free up the binding.

P.S: somebody in one18th.com forum mentioned that the 09 diffs are quite "stiff" when new, and needs to be "broken-in" if to be used in electric H8. Stick it in a drill or dremel and churn it a bit... Maybe it would smoothen the gears and free up the binding.

I took a couple pics. Let me know what you guys think

Some binding somewhere inside the bulkhead

Oh!!! What a mess!

Anyway, The binding is caused by the diff rubbing on the chassis.

When you rotated the Diff to the "correct" direction, you didn't dremel a groove into the chassis to allow the diff to move freely.(The KMRC chassis had the groove on the other side.)

So all you need now is to replace the diff pinion, and dig the groove for the diff, and you are set!

P.S: I'm wondering, how come the front didn't bind since both diffs are in the same "wrong" direction?

well, there is a groove, but i'm guessing its not deep and wide enough. So you really think I should be fine if I just make that change?

Yes.. I think that's your only problem.

Sorry I missed the replys.....Haven't been here in awhile. I think perhaps the front bevel gear is not stripped because as the Buugy accellerates, most of the power is transferred to the rear wheels and then that gear is stripped. I would check the front anyways and perform the proper mod there by placing the "divet" deep and wide enough in the correct position. I also run the Wraith 7000kv motor with the Quark 33a Pro Car and it works GREAT! Have not stripped a gear yet since I have been running the diffs in the proper position. Tried to tell KM-RC about it but they said "no one else was having these problems including their test drivers". Let us know how it goes for you.
