I just tested my new motor from http://www.hobby-lobby.com/speed400.htm
It is at the very bottom of the page and it is called the rocket. It is the same size as the stock motor with a slightly shorter can but it has a plastic endbell. It is a 4.8 volt motor so I expected some seriouse heat issues running at 10+...but I hit around 150 or so offroad.
It dramatically improves bottom end and has a lot more rpm to wind out.
It probably has a top speed of around 25-30 with an 8cell and the new "rocket"

Airplane companies are the only people who currently make a 400 size motor. So on this page, you will find the motors that all companies are basing their products off of. I am not saying that they are simply rebadged...but improving your car can be cheaper than it seems. But as always, If you want the dyno tuned ultimate motors, you will have to go with a third party.

I will also be testing the graupner 4.8 unit later on and will be tuning them to see what improvements can be made.

Have you tried out your new motor yet...I am still waiting on the graupner speed 400 4.8 to test against it. I will post results later. Maybe I can get my hands on a K4 to do a 3way comparison...

I haven't received it yet... and as you did, I also ordered a K4 so we can test them :)
And also a new Mamba 6800 :)
bye

good to hear. I believe the K4 will be faster but it will also run a lot hotter with the same # of cells.

Has nobody tried the 480 BB race (they're like 2x the power of a 400 6v)?

wont fit in the half eight. you are limited to the same length as a stock 400 and the 480 is longer...

So with the stock Speedo/receiver combo im lookin at 25-30 with a 8 cell 9.6v GP pack and what gearing??

mOOsE
05-25-2005, 05:41 AM
stock gearing is what I used. But I also broke in the motor and re-timed it for a little extra juice. And I am using matched cells that are around 11 volts. But it is still pretty fast for a 9 dollar motor. The best part is that when it gets worn out, its only 9 bucks for another. So have at it!

Ok. So if i used the stock ESC/Receiver plus a GP 9.6 v pack with that motor and 8 cells i would be fine? with no battery protection???

I was going to put in my order for a few of these, but then I realized the international shipping charge is CRAZY.....

International Airmail - $7.99 + Actual USPS Shipping Charges

Anyone know another online site that offers international shipping?

Thanks!

yes. The battery protection protects the battery, not the esc. It prevents the voltage from dropping too low.

Their is another one at my LHS. I can check my post office about shipping to hong kong and maybe I can just send you one.

Ok, here we go ...

With the less voltage in a stock H8, would the rocket then make a difference in speed over an all stock H8?

the motor will be faster with any voltage? I guess I don't understand what you are asking. 4.8 doesn't mean your run 4.8, its just a crazy airplane rating that says, the lower the voltage motor, the faster it will be with the same number of cells...basically.
Check out the vid in the general forum.

OK, I just ordered one of these "Rockets" too. I also ordered some extra stuff for my Wing Dragon (RC Plane) so the shipping wasn't such a big hit.

I'll let you know my 2 cents in a few days.

Cool. I have a 4.8 graupner 400 to test against it aswell. I will post the results after I make some runs.

I'm running united X42's 8-cell, a GM V4R ESC, and a Rocket 400 motor and the car rocks, BUT tonight i didn't wait very long between batteries, and the motor was super hot after the first battery-this led to my motor completly stopping with no response-I think I fried it but I will try to clean it and see if I can get it too spin again. If I did fry it its a bummer because it was only on its 4th battery pack!!! Oh I was running a 14 tooth pinion and do feel like a 13 would be a little more optimal!!!

I forgot to post my findings! I tested the 4.8 rocket motor against a 4.8 graupner speed 400. They were both broken in @ 4 volts and then re-timed to optimum performance. The graupner had more power on bottom and top end but got too hot. I measure around 180 degrees F after some hard pavement runs and it even hit 200 degrees. I also have holes cut into the body, a heatsink, and have opened the hole below the motor. The rocket would get to about 160 degrees F with a hard run offroad. So if you are into sniffing melting epoxy, get the speed 400 4.8 but you can count on some gearcover deformation and braincell loss.

i run the speed 400 6v and i dont have any problems..lol...im throwin it out and stickin in a bl though MUAHAHAHAH

6v is sloooow. My 4.8 was about as fast as brushless but too hot.

Is the Rocket 400 faster than the Beast Raptor or wat?? Cuz I was really lookin into geting the beast raptor. :D

mOOsE
06-28-2005, 06:31 PM
Beast Raptor is too small. It is a 300 size motor and cannot push the Half8. You must use a 400 sized motor similar to the stock one when choosing a motor. If you go brushless, then you can get away with a smaller can motor. I also live in colorado ;) Ever race at hobbytown USA?

No, b4, I was just drivin it around the neighborhood. Then I had a jackas moment :D and decided to drive it off my 2 story roof (I don't know why) and destoryed a buncha stuff. :( So now it'll take 4 ever to save up for replacement parts. But as soon as I get my car going again I will look into racing somewhere. Hobby Town's the closest (about 7 min away driving) to me so I'll more than likely end up racing at the one in Westminster.

I was the race director there for about a year. Thats why I asked, because you would know who I am then. Now I work at IBM though so life is pretty gooood. Stay away from tim though, hes grumpy. haha

moose, when you compared the motors...did u re-tune all of them?

mOOsE

yupper. I didn't run them stock because I have a hard time leaving anything untouched ;)

lol...i would do it myself..but i dont have one of those comm. thingies...lol i want brushless!!!!! lol

mOOsE
07-02-2005, 02:33 AM
comm thingies...? I use snap-ring pliers to adjust the timing, break in drops to...well. break in the motor, and I lube the bushings right off the bat. I adjust the timing until I feel I have reached the optimum rpm/amperage level. I only use my LRP charger and watch the amps being pulled from the motor and listen for rpm.

Ok, im convinced, i gotta get 1 of these. But i dont have any fancy chargers or anything so can i just hard wire it to my Futaba MC230CR and drive?

mOOsE
07-04-2005, 06:39 AM
yupper. its not as fast as a good 4.8 400 but it doesn't get red hot either.

07-05-2005, 12:14 AM
how do you adjust the timing? and are drops neccessary? and what bushings are you talking about? i might consider this instead of a aon brushless... :)

07-05-2005, 05:29 AM
o i forgot...how hot does the speed 400 4.6v get?

mOOsE
07-05-2005, 05:47 AM
Drops are not needed but like any 10th motor, it will improve performance and longevity of the bushings. You can adjust the timing by using snap-ring pliers and inserting them into the two holes on the endbell. Or, if you get the rocket motor, it is much easier to adjust the timing because you can grip the endbell with needle-nose pliers. As for the speed 400 4.8, you will hit 200 degrees F running offroad. I measured 180 after running on pavement with a heatsink, holes in the body, and the chassis modified for more cooling. It is hot enough to melt the epoxy on the armature. This motor is ok if you are racing I suppose because it will only last a few runs before nuking itself.

07-05-2005, 10:17 PM
eww! i rather have a brushless then a hot brushed motor that would melt my motor mount..lol...would it?

mOOsE
07-06-2005, 12:01 AM
naw, just your gear cover, the epoxy in the motor, wire shielding, and your fingers hahaha
I would go brushless too but I am cheap like that so I like to tweak what I already have. I will either get a 540 to work or manage to tune a 400 to insanity :)
