View Full Version : has anyone tried an outrunner?

I'm looking into a second motor and was thinking about trying an outrunner. The quark 33a pro car I have has a program to run an outrunner. The only thing I know about outrunners is, they are known for torque and spin around the core vs. the core spinning in a inrunner. Is power rated differently for outrunners vs. inrunners?

I was thinking of using the E-flite BL400 DF 3500kv (http://www.e-fliterc.com/Products/TechnicalSpecs.aspx?ProdID=EFLM1320DF2) or Century lightning brushless 400 (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXLVJ4&P=7)

Look here (http://halfeight.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1837) I tried the Align 430 in my ST with a 18t pinion. Good torque, fast enough, no heat issues. Runtime is pretty good, too - the motor doesn't seem to be drawing much Amps. Outrunners aren't that bad :D

I was thinking about trying the align 3550. Isn't the align an inrunner?

No, its an outrunner. They don't have the spinning can like regular outrunners because the rotor simply runs inside of the motor-can (which most other outrunners don't have). So they somehow look like inrunners on the pictures ... ;) The rotor also acts somehow like a fan, thats why they don't heat up that much.

I have the 3550, too and as I said before, I like it. It stays cool and doesn't draw much Amps, so you can have long runs with each battery-pack. I did not try it in the buggy yet, but its a very good motor for the ST because of its torque. Most of the tracks I drive at are rather small so I like acceleration better then insane top-speeds ;)

You should really give it a try.

thanks Janniz, my lhs does have the 3550 in stock. I'll have to try that instead of waiting for the bl400.

I just did a google on the align and it brought up some plane threads. They even talked about the bl400 df. The align 3550 is the better buy for price and power.

thanks again

I picked up the align 3550 last night. I drilled out the stock pinion and tried it out. With 12t and 11.1 lipo I have no complaints at all. Your right about it being good for small tracks. I'm going to try to race mine tonight. Even with all the torque on a 12t it's still very controllable with smooth excelleration. I even have the quark 33a torque setting set to "dynamic". I don't think I'll need to feather the throttle at all to control the speed on this.
