I think i have found the culprit as to why my Half 8 is loud. It appears that the mesh between the idler gear and the diff is off. I only found this out after i spun the gears with my finger and found that it was catching up ever so slightly. There is no way to adjust the mesh there...so my only guess is that the actual diff casing there in the center is warped or off in some way. Has anyone else encountered this?

Yeah mine catches very slightly too, maybe for one tooth per revolution of the idler gear. I figure the only way to fix this (without buying anything) is to run the car until the gears wear down a bit.

you could take some sandpaper or a file and LIGHTLY file/sand down the gears and maybe round them off a little bit....
