I have in my possesion a Box Stock RTR Mini Inferno ST. I bought it with a PN1250 nimh battery. I plan to use it to test and upgrade this truck for use as a stock 4wd race truck with a little playing around on the side.

I charged the batteries and loaded the TX bat. holder with rechargeable nimhs. I use a Vision Peak Ultra for my charging chores.

We took it outside and it ran slowly and for 2-3minutes. Not a real satisfying start. We let it cool for a few minutes, charged the battery (1amp) and took it out for its second run. Not very fast and maybe a little slippage in the slipper. It ran a little longer, the tx showed good range. We cleaned it up and put it away after the battery discharge to the point that it just wouldn't run any more.

Saturday is race day in my house. We traveled to the 1/8 track that is covered and enjoys year roung very competative racing. Once in a while some electrics show up and make a class for them. Indoor track is smaller and is not a bad 1/10 scale buggy mod and stock track.

We put the ST on the track after a full charge. Truggies and 1/8 scale buggys were flying everywhere. Open practice can be brutal. The ST was run over many times and kept on ticking. I mean litterally run over. Most of the drivers couldn't see it because it was so small in comparison to the other vehicles on the track. We did maybe three laps, held our own and had a little fun. In the end the wing got eaten and it was a dangerous situation for the ST. Willie had to hide it a couple of times to avoid being hit full throttle by a group of fast 1/8 scales.

During qualifying breaks, we took the ST out on the track and did some laps. Other electrics do this from time to time and this day there was a 1/10 stadium truck, a mini LST and a full boat Mini T. The mini T was very fast but couldn't take the bumps. The ST beat it by nearly half a lap. The miniLST just wasn't in the running with Willie running rings around the MLST and driver at times. He often waited.

The run times were getting much longer with each charge and it was taking a longer fuller charge each time. The slipper slipping was getting noticeable, clearly. Second break of the day, some interested was expressed in the ST, one of the traveling hot shoes wanted to drive it. I charged it at 2amps this time and it soaked that up nicely. I was thinking it may provide more punch though that wasn't really the problem. The top speed was much higher, probably double the speeds we saw when we first ran the ST.

It traveled the track at full throttle all the time. This is a 1/8 nitro technical track. 30 sec laps was average to make the A main. The ST was running about 45 seconds. Not that fast but the handling was really good. It flew straight and true, it landed without any muss or fuss. Steering was good, not too jumpy, but responsive. I think the gyro effect of the tire/wheel package helps these things a lot.

So, in the end: Stock out of the box, nimh 9.6v bats. it is reasonable and not a bad setup. No adjustments, no tweaks. It runs really well, much better than I thought it would. The slipper was slipping lots at the end of the day. Acceleration was limited and jumping was minimally affected because of it. Top speed wasn't a problem because once it stopped slipping and caught up with itself, it maintained top speed well.

It took a beating it shouldn't ever see and survived quite well thank you. The next step will be tweaking the slipper based on this board's posts, a URC GP1100 9.6v batt. and change over to Dean's ultra connectors for rec/esc and batts. I will pull the shocks apart and put silicone shock fluid in the reservoir. I will also put Kyosho general purpose grease in the f/r diffs. (no silicone weighted fluids or grease yet) as well as the ctr diff.

I want to slowly bring it up to speed with basic things. I also have a aluminum motor mount and X-Speed motor with ST's name on it. I am wondering how much performance there is with batt. change and slipper fix. With a little grease to smooth things out maybe it will be faster.

I have used a Tekin MOT950 motor analyzer to break in the motors. I set the voltage to 2.5v and watch the amp draw until it drops to a stablized amperage. Usually this takes about half a 1250 pack. The motor is free runing, without a load on it. This is per the instructions delivered with the motor analyzer. I have used it to breakin many motors and it gives good uniform results. I have used it and this method to setup up reversed brushed motors set timing on tuneable brushed motors.

I have decided to name the ST WinSTon for silliness. :D

Good info Hawk,

My ST should be here tomorrow. Have Tekin Mini Rage ESC, Hyperion 6000.

Wondering what I need to do to the diffs? Have read all "ronny's" comments - but seems like other forum members always end up confusing the issue.

Read that for BL - use heavy greas in the front - lighter in the rear and Very heavy in the center. The I read - do nothing to the center.

Comments anyone?

The center is the problem child...

IF you grease it it only works for a few miniuts then it's dry again and you have a mess
It will also turn to mud if dirt gets in and it will.

For now open is best. I put graphite in it just to lube it up some.
The center will work with a BL setup but the spur will drive you crazy.

not sure what you mean the spur will drive me crazy. You mean maintaining the proper mesh?

I happen to use the badhorsie grease in the center diff. It is very sticky. I apply a small amount and it lasts for a day of racing or bashing.

My spurs have been holding up well (knocks on head....wood)
I use the 3r aluminum motor plate and check the tightness of the screws after every run.

Im happy to see you have favorable results with the ST. My son likes his so much he wont let me play with it. Looks like I will be buying one too.

You might notice I am building two, upgrading the ST box stocker and a PitBull conversion from a buggy. I will get to play once in a while with the stocker build up. The racer will be driven by my son only. That's how it goes I guess.

I like the name WinSTon for whatever reason. So, for even more silliness I named my being built ST 'STudley'. My wife thinks its' dumb but then she also thinks I am dumb sometime even though I explain to her I am an educated redneck. And that's not an oxymoron. :D

Can't wait to get my STudley up and running.

how about naming it STicker shock? cause mine is going to be 500+bucks when done.

Today, WinSTon gets a Kyosho X-Speed motor (IHW13) in a 3Racing ti motor mount, United RC X42s battery pack w/Deans ultra connector, Deans ultra connector on the stock ESC/rx.
While I had the motor/mount out, I tightened the slipper spring. It was slipping way too much with stock motor and the 9.6v PN1250 pack it shipped with. I tightened it until it is just shy of coil bind on the spring. It didn't slip on acceleration after the Battery/Motor swap so I guess this will do for now.

Willie and I were pleasantly surprised by the extra power and run time available with the X42s pack. The motor had a noticeable increase in speed and punch out of the corner. It was all very controlable and a fun setup just like this. I think for a 1/16 big tired ST it is a very nice package. It handled the front yard grass and curb jump testing with dirt oval speeds and power slides that were impressive.

I charged the battery with Vision Peak Ultra charger on nimh setting, 1.1 amps (1C) and it peaked at 12.19v at 1hr5min. Like I said, good run times 15-18min and nice bump in speed and punch. After the run, the motor/motor mount and heat sink were noticeably warm almost hot to the touch. I have misplaced my temp gun or I would have given a reading, sorry. I used the stock pinion (12t). This wasn't a bad setup and I will try the 14t pinion to see what effect that has.

One thing I noticed was the excessive play in the steering and in all the wheels. I have shims in house now to shim the axles so that should be taken care of soon. I plan to install the knuckles from 3Racing along with the kingpins in the photo. I will use 10.9 alloy steel flush hex head screw M3x6mm in all four holes. I will put Loctite 242 (blue) from the stick applicator in pic. on to the screws and let them dry before assembly. Loctite cures anerobicly so it will not start to cure until the screws are in the threads. I will let then set for 4-8 hours to make sure they get a good grip.

I have a H8 set of titanium tie rods and will install them in the front end to replace the current setup. This will be used with the 3Racing ball end set.

So shimmed and tightened front end, shimmed steering and some battery magic will tell its tale next. I am going to look at the bump steer issue mentioned recently after this. I have GPM and 3Racing steering setups. I will try both to see what happens.

I like the speed for this scale. I am not one that wants a out of control 50mph screamer. I want something that can be driven with some skill to make fast lap times and is FUN to play with around the house. So far I think we are on a very good track to realize this.

I have a very similar set up in my sons ST. It is plenty fast. Im not going to tighten up the steering and the wheels because I believe the play helps the truck stay together when my son crashes it.....If I make everything tight it might destruct on impact......I want one for myself now but I have to start thinning our herd......(tough decision on what to give up)

Yeah, I'm about to let the Mini-LST go for 250 including 2 trinity cobalt 18 (16 turn) motors, hotbodies body posts, and deans ultra plugs on the pack/ESC. Probably just going to put in the LHS. It would sell in a couple days probably. The Mini-T really broke my heart on the small dirt oval (bluegroove) this weekend. It could just barely keep up with the 1:10 scale bunch, but I'd expect that some bigger wheels would even the playing field.

I was using simple green and a blow torch to stickify the tires. haha! I need a 1:10 electric stock truck.

Bit,
You need to get rid of some stuff to SEE your office. lol. Remember I said it looked like the insides of an RC pinata?

Do you know what a pinata is? I thought it was funny but if you don't know, it doesn't make much sense.

WinSTon is getting lots of makeup and new clothes. He likes to play dressup like BigRob.lol
Pitbull(r) arrived for WinSTon today. Pretty soon the only difference between WinSTon and Nelson will be the wing and brushless v brushed. This is proving very interesting. The brushed setup works very nicely and the alloy chassis may be over kill but I live by the words, If it is worth killing, then it is worth overkilling.

I love the smell of Napalm in the morning.

Don't have what, cross dressers? I live near S.F., there are way too many around here. As for being smacked with a stick, What ever floats your boat guy. :D

...Pinatas dopey :p And it wasnt ME that got a floating boat from the caning but i still have doubts about the teacher involved...He was my homeroom teacher and my french teacher...We were goofing off in the computer class, climbing the walls ninja style in the doorframe (think Spiderman) and the computer teacher, a vaguely lesbian character who had the eternally funny nickname of 'Pubes' due to the short shorts she wore at summer camp, couldnt cope with us...It would have been fine but the FRENCH teacher was rumpy pumpy with the COMPUTER teacher so we got caned...

...You are lucky though Hawk...His name wasn't winSTon :D

...Cross dressers? Lets not delve TOO deeply into each other's past ;)

...and we need a picture of winSTon with his clothes on..
