haha! Don't slip on your Mkeka, and certainly don't let the guy with the herpie sip from your Kikombe cha umoja! I'm sure he's in denial about his Kinara (it's a menora). All joking aside, I don't support "The True Path to Blackness" (*), but a cult leader capable of what he admitately did doesn't deserve to create any holiday.

* = A quote from Karenga's book, "The sevenfold path of blackness is think black, talk black, act black, create black, buy black, vote black, and live black"

"The victims said they were living at Karenga’s home when Karenga accused them of trying to kill him by placing crystals in his food and water and in various areas of his house. When they denied it, allegedly they were beaten with an electrical cord and a hot soldering iron was put in Miss Davis’ mouth and against her face. Police were told that one of Miss Jones’ toes was placed in a small vise, which then was tightened by the men and one woman. The following day Karenga told the women that ‘Vietnamese torture is nothing compared to what I know." Miss Tamao put detergent in their mouths; Smith turned a water hose full force on their faces, and Karenga, holding a gun, threatened to shoot both of them. The victims Deborah Jones and Gail Davis were whipped with an electrical cord and beaten with a karate baton after being ordered to remove their clothing."

Do you research, then judge for yourself. Happy Kwanza... I guess.

Then how is Christmas any better? What did Jesus have to do with acting fake/nice and buying presents only once a year. It is capitalism that promotes x-mas , not Jesus.
The value of the holidays lies on the beholder. kids don't know of the history behind these things. They just know how it makes them feel. Good food, fun, family, presents, singing, it is just an excuse to celebrate. That is why folks refer to it as the Holiday Spirit. Just be nice boys/girls

Dang, did you have that quote pasted up on your wall or in your back pocket just waiting for a chance to use it? R U angry at some body?LOL

Absolutely correct for many (most?) people. Some people actually get down with the Jesus and are all about the whole christmas spirit thing. "Then how is Christmas any better?" As far as I know, the creator of christmas wasn't convicted for false arrest and felonious assault.Regardless, I get down on presents because I like to give to friends. I give stuff to friends thoughout the year though (mostly good wine I come across, and specialty beer. haha) Unfortunately some of Jesus' followers have done terible things (Nazis, Spanish Inqusition, etc, etc)

Yes, I sort of got into the anti-kwanza mood recently with Tookie and all.

Actually, no. I don't have Mein Kampf's finale on my wall either. haha. I'm not mad at anyone at all. I just discovered this stuff this year, and it seems like some people want to ignore it.

He wasn't striving for unity outside of the race. While the Black Panther's believed in a unified United States, white and black, Karenga's United Slaves group was a separatist movement. Just like the modern-day KKK, they wanted a separate nation for whites and blacks. (Note: read Karenga's "The True Path to Blackness" in his book.)

The friction between his' United Slaves movement and the Panthers mirrored the centuries of tribal warring in Africa. Both groups were heavily recruiting at UCLA in the 60’s and vying for control of the newly developed African Studies Department. Karenga and his group backed one candidate for dept. head and the Panthers another. Both began carrying guns on campus and on Jan. 17. 1969, about 150 students gathered at the lunchroom to discuss the problem. Two Panther members had been admitted to the college as part of a federal program that helped black high-school dropouts enter the university. The meeting turned violent and ended with two of Karenga’s group, George P. Stiner and Larry Joseph Stiner killing two. The Stiner brothers shot two Panthers John Huggins, 23 and Alprentice "Bunchy" Carter, 26 – dead.

Kujichagulia (Self-Determination)
To define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves and speak for ourselves.

On the surface, this seems fine and good. Notice the "ourselves". This isn't refering to humans, americans, or any other generality. Just blacks.

Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility)
To build and maintain our community together and make our brother's and sister's problems our problems and to solve them together.

More racial divide.

Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics)
To build and maintain our own stores, shops and other businesses and to profit from them together.

Our own. see the pattern here? Also, notice the "profit from them together." One more thing the Nazis and they have in common... socialism.

Nia (Purpose)
To make our collective vocation the building and developing of our community in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness.

I'll stop myself here. Repetition is an artform.

Kuumba (Creativity)

Just thought I would add so'in

You don't see black in there man? The US in US-organization is his United Slaves site!

Read more about his beliefs. Google search! There is tons of information out there from reputable sources about his history, and in fact, whole sites dedicated to his teachings. Get yourself a copy of his book "The Quotable Karenga" and READ IT!

Here is another quote from his site. Read it. Tell me if you think of white people as "the oppressors."

In discussing the death of Tupac Shakur, one of the first things we have to do is to develop an Afrocentric position in order to make sure we distinguish our position from the one that our oppressor has taken. We have to make a clear line of distinction between our position and the oppressor's evaluation and then accept the responsibility for giving a moral and meaningful interpretation of the incident. The oppressor will use this event to condemn Black people and young Black men under the camouflage of moral concern about gangsta rap. We must expose his tactics, criticize his selective morality and demand an equal criticism of similar white music. Having done this, we still must set our own standards of right and wrong, of health and illness, of the Good and the bad. For the oppressor cannot be our teacher; nor can we escape responsibility for our own wrongful acts by pointing out his. This is his way; to commit a Holocaust of Enslavement and try to equate that with a seven-eleven robbery. Our constant quest is to become and be the best of what it means to be both African and human in the fullest sense. And to do this we must constantly question and challenge ourselves.

I can't even begin to respond to that without taking 2 hours our of my christmas eve. "This is his way; to commit a Holocaust of Enslavement and try to equate that with a seven-eleven robbery" WTF? Did you know he was, after his arrest for torture of a few BLACK people, he was found to be a paranoid scisophrenic? Who is the oppressor?

"Stop. Think. Pimpsmurf." (tm)

Have a happy holidays everyone! No matter what you choose to call your celebration, don't be shy of exploring it's history.
