Okay, I did not see a thread devoted to this subject so, with the moderator's permission, I would like to create a topic on Servo Choices - Pros and Cons.

Reason being is because I am in the process of building up my own Mini Inferno, my wife prefers I not mess with hers, and am now at the stage of having to select the servo.

Personally, I have most of my life been a Futaba user. Their products have stood the test of time and abuse and I have been a very satisfied user.

But times change and I hear a lot of good things about the Hitec components and am willing to give them, or others, a try.

So please post your opinions, experiences, and recommendations.

BTW, I really did search the board and could not find anything on this specific topic.

I have only heard good things about the Hitec HS-85MG. Seems to be perfect for the H8 platform.

...The 9650 is the FUTABA offering...its digital, fits the KYOSHO designed servo bracket (which it was essentiallY DESIGNED for; the bracket that is) and will work with your high-response HRS RX and the WHOLE Futaba family...The HITEC has metaal gears, the FUTABA doesnt...The numbers I can get for you later...If you are a FUTABA groupie you MIGHT find the speed of the HITEC a little lethargic...

stay away from the hitec 85mg. it has a problem centering. the non-metal gear one will center better but is obviously not as strong. when i opened mine (i use to run one in a m18) i saw that the final output gear had a little slack on the axle that connects it to the pot. if that makes sense. anyways i dont thing that would be a good servo for this car ;p

I thought that was a different Hitec servo? Hmm...well I am happy with mine. Doesn't the futaba cost alot?

Those futabas are nice, but I'm going with the HS81MG though. It's a little faster, although not quite as much torque. The HS85MG is a nice servo (and half the price of the futaba), but the HS81MG has price, durability, and speed on it's side...

i put the hs81mg in my sons H8. It has held up really well. He crashes a lot.... he is 6.....I was thinking about putting in a beefier servo but the service we are getting from the 81mg Im thinking twice......He raced at the ECC and we saw Jeremy Kortz' s setup. He uses a full size servo with a custom made mounting plate (flat stock on top of servo, bolted to the chassis.)

Hi :)

I have tried 3 different servos in the H8. Here is my personal opinion.

1.st one, Hitec HS-81MG. This servo was VERY good indeed, and was the cheapest of the 3. Very fast, good torq. I had no reason to change this servo
but I read that it had a centering problem. I never experianced this, but changed before finding out myself. My bud overtook that servo, and still no problems with it. I would recommend this servo for the H8!

2.nd one, Hitec 85MG "Mighty Micro". This servo was also a good sevo, strong torqy motor, but it's rated speed is 0.14.sec compared to the 0.9 sec that the 81MG delivers. This 85MG has 0.5.kg more torq, but the speed, 0.14.sec was a killer & a deal-breaker for me personally - WAY to slow.
This servo is recommended for it's torq, and if you feel it's fast enough for you. This servo comes in 3.rd out of the 3 for me.

3.rd one. Futaba 9650 DIGITAL.
Oh yeah baby :D This, IF you wanna spend the cash, IS BY FAR
the best servo I have tried in the H8, without question!!

This servo beside the fact that it's digital, and responds 50 times quicker to inputs then ANY analog servo, transform the power & speed on a totally different level. This servo has 4.5.kg's of DIGITAL tourq & 0.11.sec DIGITAL speed. So you can then imagen how the 4.5.kg of digital torq feels, and the 0.11.sec speed that respond 50 times quicker to the inputs you make compared to a analog ;) And IF you wanna go all out, use the Futaba HRS receiver to get MAX power, speed AND respons like no other. Just check with Castle Creation (maker of famouse MAMBA25 esc) IF that's the esc you are going to use  IF it will work with the Futaba HRS!!!!!!!! Mucho importante!!

I would HIGHLY recommend the Futaba 9650 servo!

...As with anything in this lifestyle, im sorry but this doesnt count as my 'hobby' anymore :o , there are different levels of price commitment and desired performance...for me so far the 8gMG has been the greatest...But I am in a place now that i want to run the 9650...They are all good but t each his own...

...Ronny good point RE: Castle...I have to check that...

I am running a Hitec 85MG. I will probably be replacing it. It is too slow for me. I may try my Hitec 81MG or purchase a micro KO servo. I used to hate Hitec.. but those 2 servos I mentioned are not bad for the price.

I just sold a Futaba S3102 servo.. because it was slow. I will have to check KO's website to see what they offer. I love KO!

Ronny BitHed and anyone else interested in the use of Futaba HRS receiver (R203HF) with Mamba 25 ESC.
I have setup and run a 3PK/R203HF Mamba 25 CM2080 setup in my H8. I used the standard setup procedures and the Mambalink USB and software. Everything works beautifully. I was using a Thunderpower 3cell LiPo battery 11.1v, 730mAh. Other than reversing the throttle servo setting (most esc's use Futaba in that configuration) all was ordinary.
I gotta get a better soldering iron and get this thing on the road.

...I have decided to stick with AM for a while longer...my usage just doesnt qualify for the luxury of FM...As inviting as it is....ESPECIALLY when i know that my new FUTABA 9650 has the abiltity of High Response...The 85MG will go in the second car...

...Hawk thanks for that RE: the MAMBA and FUTABA being friends...Makes me much happier...

hmmm...seems I'm bucking the trend with the servo I have in my half8...I used the BlueBird BMS-380MAX Micro Servo...this is a tiny (about the same size as the Hitec) and strong as anything servo...

Weight: 17.2 Grams / 0.64 oz
Size: 29.5 x 13 x 26mm / 1.16 x 0.51 x 1.03 in.
Torque At 4.8V: 57 oz.in.
Speed At 4.8V: 0.16 sec / 60°
Torque At 6.0V: 62 oz.in.
Speed At 6.0V: 0.14 sec / 60°
Ball Bearing: Single
Metal Gears: Yes

its a killer little servo - and very reasonably priced (about $22USD)...I remounted it (like regan and jeremy), but I attached it to my chassis with that R/C racer godsend, ShoeGoo :) I attached a pic of it in my half8...I bought one of these for my RC18T and was soo happy, I ran out an ordered one for the half8

Edit didnt read the last post [/b] sorry, but i agrre with the poster above me :D

Heres my tip, ive been using HS-85 in my "Mini-T,Duratrax MiniQuake and Half8" the HS85MG is a good, fast ant touque servo, and its not so big.

BUT after been recomended from my local dealer the Bluebird BMC-380MAX Competition MG all i can say, change!

Smaller than HS85(just a few mm)
Faster
More tourque
And got metall gears

Been running this in my MiniQuake with 540 engine and 8!! 4/5 Sub-c and without servo saver..and ive been crashing a lot!! its faster than my hs-85 and it holds together.

I noticed none of you guys mentioned the Futaba 3102? I've been using it in my RC18T for a while now and its great! 0.20 sec @ 4.7kg and metal geared, about $35 from memory, no centring issues and very very strong. A little slow i know but good torque and very reliable, very happy with mine.

in the readyset kit it comes with various bulkheads to fit most servos. Just change it to servo mount H from the bag along with the hitec servo horn......

They are in a plastic bag should be there. at least 2 xtras for dif. servos.
I beleive it's bag# IH16

In the readyset....the parts are are in unmarked bag. If you did not get a readyset and bought it used. You will need part bag ih16 (servomounts)and bag ih11 (servo horns)....They are about $6-7 for each bag......

If you can not get your hands on one .I bet somebody here has one they could send you.
I just took all that stuff out and shoegoo'd it in.
This works well just cover the whole bottom of the servo and make sure it dries for at least 24 hrs.
I have done this twice in the half8 and it is solid ;)
