OK...

I got my Atomic Center Diff today. From looking at it it seems like it will work great! But ive heard that some people were having problems.. What should I expect?

...The ATOMIC sits well and works great in the ATOMIC center hub..I didnt like it in the 3R hub and never tried it in the stock hub...I ran stock diff in 3R hub and it was functioning fine, then swapped it out to test the ATOMIC setup...I have it cranked tight but it still slips a 'little' from a dead start...need to thrash some more on the weekend but I can likely see myself going back to stock diff in a 3R hub...my 2 cents...

...what IS interesting about this is there is STILL the 'to be confirmed' center one way from KYOSHO...This is item #IHW28...Thats all i know about it...

he is probley sleeping right now... but when he is awake putting our orders up?

BitHed
12-19-2005, 11:15 PM
...sleeping is NOT an option right now...But I am back now..I just needed a time out, some time for a cookie...Im all better now...

...The diffs have not arrived with me yet...But that has givebn me time to realise my mistakes...The following facts have become known...

...IH103 contains the ACTUAL diff GEARS...they are fiddly as hell and construction should NOT be rushed...I pray for the guys with big fat fingers...And getting grease onto these things is going to cause SOME people some major headaches...I out them aside while i worked on my buggy / ST conversion...

...IH104 contains the SMALL PARTS...The screws, o rings, gaskets and the SUPER TINY wee nuts for the screws...This set contains enough 'small parts' for TWO DIFFS...I have quoted everyone for ONE 104 with EACH 103 :o

...I HIGHLY recommend having a VERY small screwdriver on hand for putting these together...In fact you MUST...I am used to the Mini Z size stuff but the parts in these diffs will change the way you think about plastics...

...I have ordered TOO many 104 and not enough 103...Also my original pricing was for ONE 104 with EACH 103

...the UPDATED cups for the diffs are in the IH100 shock stay sets...I have NOT supplied ANY cups with the diffs...I understood that everyone knew that so if you areconfused with that MAIL ME and I will try to get it sorted out...

...We MUST have the NEW wrench tool; IH113...Without it you CANNOT get these diffs together...And this is the biggest delay right now...I cannot get enough wrenchs from one place so I am doing the rounds and trying to get them, one for each order...

...I am in the process of recalculating everyones payments, adding the wrench and subtracting the overcharged small parts sets...NO ONE will lose ANY money owed or not get the items they ordered...I just need some time to sit down and do the numbers...Apologies for cocking this up...Also a shout out to the members who mailed me privately with words of encouragement...I will be mailing all clients as soon as i get this done...

BiGRoB21
12-19-2005, 11:33 PM

BitHed

12-19-2005, 11:51 PM
Were on the edge of the cliff with you man.
it makes scence the way they split up the bags and the wrench deal is par for the course.
Thanks for your help my LHS wont get it right we would just be sitting here with half our stuff. Just the way it is .
Kyosho should sell the diff's in kit form they have to know we would want them.
Maybe they dont know maybe it was just what they were doing for the St and they didn't think of us after all.

the tool holds the small bevel gear in place while you install the outdrive to it using a screw.....(keeps the gear from spinning while tightening)

Hey everyone.
Dont ask Bit to ship without the tool unless you are sure.
I just dont want to sound like the tool dosen't matter, it may be as Bit is thinking that you have to have it.
We havent seen it go together as Bit has.

We are desperate to get these and will fab a tool if we have to.
This may not be a good idea for everybody.

Just don't want to get Bit in trouble we are asking him to ship without knowing,,, we could be wrong.

As soon as I or anyone else can we will let you know our opinion not that its any better than Bits but if theres a trick we will post asap.

Kyosho America says these buggers are now available to ship state-side. They said the old H8 cups will work great in the half-8

My question is, didn't bithed mention the gear ratio was changed in the front and rear diffs? (not in the slipper or center diff) Hence the new wrench tool needed for the new diffs. right? If that is so, then the ST must have 2 diff tools then. correct? "I'm so confused" (best c3po voice)

-JNY

the diff tool has 2 sides(one for the center diff/one for the wheel diffs).....so you only need one type of wrench per vehicle.

...All due respect Pimpy but of course they would say that...They fit no problems, but even MISTER KYOSHO USA, Regan LeBlanc, has said the new cups wont stand up under brushless power in the long run...And considering the diffs have MORE torque, ie more power to get them rolling rolling rolling ('RAWHIDE'!!) then they are still going to get shredded...but yes the 'old' cups fit fine...

...The gearing IN the ST diffs has changed...You need the wrench to hold everything solid while you fit the cups on...The gear that joins the drive shaft to the diff has NOT changed, though the material used does look slightly better on the new ones...

...FYI: KYOSHO is going to release a set of DELRIN gears for the center diff only; MAIN center gear, NOT spider gears, and both gears on the slipper shaft...Price looks to be about 16 USD shipped from PanicToy-JPN...

LOL! Yeah that sounded weird. I meant they would fit. IE, kyosho alloy cups, and 3Racing titanium cups will work on the OG-H8. The ST cups are different apparently. Not just beefier. Supposeable the dogbones are larger (not just longer)?!? *shrug* Maybe you can confirm that...

...The gearing IN the ST diffs has changed...You need the wrench to hold everything solid while you fit the cups on...The gear that joins the drive shaft to the diff has NOT changed, though the material used does look slightly better on the new ones...

So the gearing changed in the front and rear diffs? The new diff gear has more teeth then? It boggles the mind... playing too much Sword of Mana waiting on the ST diffs to arrive.

I can't wait for those delrin slipper gears! Finally I can stop worrying about scoring a DSM setup so I could run all-metal without fear of glitching and interference.

Happy days,

the stock cups on an ST are beefier. they have molded gussets...6 of them on the closed end (closest to the diff) the dogbones are the same dia. just longer.
A few other differences are the steering ball stud ball socket arrangement has been changed to a balllink instead of a ballcup. The front shock tower is closed on the top....

Thanks man! I was confused. So they use something like a captured end on the steering where there used to be a ball cup? I think I'm going to have to get ahold of those too! I havn't had any problems with them popping off, but there is a little play inside of ball cups that we might get rid of with captured ball ends.=)

Thier not to bad just takes a little longer.
Once you have some grease in it you can push in a screw and some grease will come out the hole then you can stick the nut in that grease.
Need a real small phillips.
Works better if you tighten in a X patern.

I have silicone diff oil but I wonder if the grease might be a better bet. Any one use oil in the sealed diff yet? I guess with so little space to fill it would be close to the same thing.
Maybe I will use oil. So 5/0/2 Rob? Sounds about right to me.

30k seems it will be really high for something this small. i accually thought that useing 5k and 2k would be high b/c thats what i use in the front and rear diffs on my 8th scale and being these are much smaller i thought i would have to use some heavy weight shock oils for them to work the way i want them to

BitHed
01-05-2006, 04:33 AM
...I put 30,000 in the front without running them first...I actually PREFER the feeling i get from having NOTHING in them...I might just make up an extra dry one and pass on the 30,000 one with the remaining BUCKET of grease i have for it...

hrtln
01-05-2006, 04:37 AM
30,000 to 50,000 in the front feels about right. I think the gears in it are so small that it takes a thicker oil to get right. I ran 5000 in the rear, and 30,000 in the front. I don't know if this is the right setup, but it feels and works good. ;)

I am running Tekin, Hacker 4900, 3 cell lipo.
Several people at my track are running this setup and we were going through rear stock diff's about every 2 race's give or take a bit.
SO far the new ST diffs are holding up so I would say they are better but it is too soon to know if they will be a long term fix.

They definitly are smoother on the track you could see and kind of feel the differance right away. It seems like the car is more settled on track.

Like Turttle said 30.000 silicon in front and 5,000 in back is working well ,hard to say if this is the ultimate yet.

One thing we have observed thats worth noteing is this.
They do take more time to build not really something you want to have to assemble between heats.
You need to put the outdrives on before assembly of the diff.
So we think you probably should have extra (Hard ) outdrives to use for assembling complete extra Diff.'s incase you need to replace at the track.

If you assemble without outdrives you will just have to take it apart again to to attach the outdrives which is then a pretty good mess.

Also the tool for assembly is nice to have, but you can hold the gear with a towel if needed.

Cna anyone verify the gear ratio on the new ST diff as being lower??

BiGRoB21
01-05-2006, 05:17 PM
if it was lower you would be able to notice a decrease in speed. unless you also switches to a 3 cell when you changed the diffs.

i reciently switched over to a thunder power 1350 3 cell lipo and i am very pleased with the performance of my car now! just want to get the diffs to see if that will help the front tires from spooling soooo much.

i can say this the way i have my car set up now. i am able to keep up with the local 8th scale racers with a modded p5 on the stright! i need to get a few other things to get it to jump right cause the front wheels are spooling soo much it is pulling the front end of my car down quick. hopefully i can get a PITBULL chassis soon cause i think mounting the motor in the rear will help solve that problem.

Trickpatrick
01-05-2006, 05:31 PM
I have the Pittbull now assembled but havn't tried it yet. Have motor in back.
I dont have a scale to check but it doesnt seem much different wieght bias wise.
The moter is so light and the battery too.

We have been running a heavier oil in front shocks to help the front stay up in the jump work'd right away about 40 45 seems pretty good.
We were hungup on this becase we thought the car need lighter fluids both shocks and diffs. but heavier seems to work better.

Still using lightest springs.

Large bevel gears on ST diffs are 39 teeth, buggy are 36 teeth. Both use the same small bevel gear, 8t.
Buggy 4.5:1
ST 4.875:1
That is 8.3% higher (numerically) gearing.
Kyosho website advertises ST 12.6, buggy 10.8 final drive ratios. That is a 16.7% higher (numerically) ratio. So half comes from the diffs. I guess the motor pinion could change. Buggy stock motor pinion gear is 14t. At 15t motor pinion would be a 7.1% ratio increase and could account for the rest of the difference.
I don't have a ST motor/ctr diff to tell if any of those have changed for sure.
